Brand guide
La Flor Dominicana
La Flor Dominicana, or LFD, is a family-owned cigar company in the Dominican Republic, founded by Litto and Ines Gomez and built on tobacco from its own farm.
A jeweler and his wife started LFD
Litto Gomez, a former jeweler, and Ines Gomez started the company.
The maker dates its start to 1994 and released a 30 Years cigar to mark the anniversary. Wikipedia gives 1996 for the first production run, in Santiago. The brand began life under another name, Los Libertadores. The new one nods to the flower of the tobacco plant.
Wikipedia names the manufacturing company as Tabacalera La Flor S.A.
Where is La Flor Dominicana made?
LFD cigars are made at the company's factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic, near Santiago.
The maker says it wanted its own factory for "total control" over quality. Production started in Santiago before the move, per Wikipedia. The Gomez family also runs its own box factory in the Dominican Republic, which built the humidors for the 30 Years release.
LFD grows its own leaf in La Canela
La Flor Dominicana grows much of its filler and binder on its own farm in La Canela, Dominican Republic.
Most line pages say "estate grown" for the filler and binder. Wrapper was the hard part. Wikipedia says LFD started growing shade wrapper in 2002 and that in 2006 Gomez bought a 40-acre farm for Corojo and Sumatra. The maker says that in 1999 it set out to make a cigar entirely from its own farm, wrapper included. The result is the LG Dominican Puro, released as a yearly vintage using four-year-old tobacco. The Litto Gomez Small Batch uses a farm-grown Pelo de Oro wrapper.
Imported leaf still shows up. Ecuador supplies most wrappers. Brazil, Mexico and Nicaragua appear too.
La Flor Dominicana lines and wrappers
Each line below is on the maker's site, and LFD publishes its blends but no strength scale, so none appears here.
| Line | Wrapper (maker) | Binder | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ligero | Ecuadorian Sumatra | Estate-grown Dominican | L-Granu, 6 x 64 |
| Double Ligero | Ecuadorian Sumatra, sun grown | Estate-grown Dominican | Every size in natural and maduro |
| Andalusian Bull | Ecuadorian Corojo, dark natural | Grown on the LFD farm | Filler also from the LFD farm |
| Colorado Oscuro | Nicaraguan Habano, dark | Dominican | Dominican and Nicaraguan filler |
| Double Claro | Ecuadorian (candela) | Nicaraguan | Green-wrapped |
| La Nox | Brazilian maduro | San Andrés | Dominican Piloto and Pelo de Oro filler |
| Reserva Especial | Ecuadorian Connecticut | Grown on the LFD farm | Revives the El Jocko blend |
The maker calls Ligero its first full-bodied cigar and Double Ligero a continuation of the trend toward powerful blends. Air Bender wraps estate-grown Dominican filler and binder in Habano. The 1994 line, made for the 20th anniversary, uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper. Cameroon Cabinet uses aged Cameroon ligero wrappers.

What to know before you buy an LFD
LFD sizes on the maker's pages reach a 6 x 64 L-Granu, and LFD's Chisel shape is box pressed.
Pressed and round sit side by side in the range. If the square shape is new to you, our box-pressed guide explains it. Several lines, Double Ligero and Air Bender among them, come in both natural and maduro wrappers. Check which one is on the band before comparing notes.
