Storage and humidity

Humidor seasoning planner

You season a humidor by letting its bare cedar soak up moisture before any cigar goes in, which takes about two weeks with 84% packs. Pick your setup for a day-by-day plan.

Method
Starting point

Distilled water only, whatever the method. Nothing should ever drip or pool on the cedar.

Ready for cigars onDay 14

Boveda's method: 4 seasoning packs, lid shut for 14 days.

  1. Day 1Load the seasoning packs

Unwrap 4 Size 60 packs at 84% RH (one per 25 cigars of capacity). Put them in the empty box with a hygrometer. Shut the lid.

  2. Day 2Leave it shut

Do not open the lid, whatever the hygrometer reads. The wood is drinking, so the air reading lags.

  3. Day 14Open and check

Pull the seasoning packs and throw them out; they are not reused. A reading in the mid-60s is normal at this point.

  4. Day 14Switch to maintenance

Put in 4 packs at your storage RH (69% suits most rooms). Add cigars.

Raw cedar drinks the water meant for your cigars

Seasoning is pre-loading the humidor's Spanish cedar with moisture so it stops pulling water out of the cigars. A new box is dry wood. Put cigars in it on day one and the wood takes their water first.

Seasoned cedar works the other way. It holds a reserve, smooths out the swing when you open the lid, and gives some back when the air dries.

How do you season a humidor with packs?

Boveda's published method is 84% RH seasoning packs, one Size 60 for every 25 cigars of rated capacity, in the empty box for 14 days. The steps:

  1. Unwrap the packs and put them in the empty humidor with a hygrometer.
  2. Shut the lid. Don't open it for 14 days, whatever the hygrometer says.
  3. On day 14, take the packs out and throw them away. They are single-use.
  4. Put in storage packs, 69% for most rooms, and add your cigars.

Expect about 65% on the hygrometer at the end. Boveda says the wood is still absorbing at that point, which is the whole job.

The sponge and wipe methods are our plan, not a maker's

The sponge method puts a source of distilled water inside the closed box and lets the cedar take it up as vapour. It's older, cheaper and slower to read, because you're checking and re-wetting by hand. The timeline above for sponge and wipe is our schedule, built to keep liquid off the wood.

  • Squeeze the sponge until it stops dripping. Then squeeze it again.
  • Stand it on a plastic lid or in a shallow dish. Never on the cedar.
  • Check it every second day. Dry sponge, re-wet. Damp wood, use less.
  • Call it done when the hygrometer holds 65 to 70% for two days running.

Two ways to ruin a humidor while seasoning it

Over-wetting is the first. Liquid water on cedar is how boxes warp, lids stop sealing and veneers crack. Boveda says applying moisture straight to the surface can warp the wood, and that a wipe-down delivers only about 2 to 3 grams of water anyway. Barely damp, or not at all.

Tap water is the second. It carries dissolved minerals, and they don't leave when the water does. The EPA's humidifier fact sheet says tap-water minerals build crusty scale in home humidifiers. In a humidor, that residue stays in the wood. Use distilled.

And a third, smaller one: don't keep opening the lid to check. Every look lets the moisture out you've been waiting for.

Questions about seasoning a new humidor

How long does it take to season a humidor?

Fourteen days with 84% seasoning packs, which is the method Boveda publishes. A damp-sponge setup usually needs about a week, and an old box that sat dry for months needs longer.

Can I season a humidor with tap water?

Use distilled water. Tap water carries minerals that stay behind when it evaporates, the same minerals the EPA says build scale in home humidifiers. In a closed humidor, that residue ends up on the wood.

Should I wipe the inside of my humidor with water?

Boveda says no. A wipe puts only 2 to 3 grams of water into the surface layer, and direct liquid on cedar can warp or crack it. If you wipe anyway, keep the cloth barely damp.

Why is my humidor only reading 65% after seasoning?

That is normal. Boveda says two weeks of 84% packs bring a box to about 65% RH, because the cedar keeps soaking up water. It climbs once storage packs go in.
