Storage and humidity

Wineador beads calculator

A wineador needs at least 1 pound of humidity beads per 5 cubic feet inside, about 91 grams per cubic foot. Enter your cooler's inside size for grams and ounces.

Heartfelt sells beads at 65% and 70%. The weight per cubic foot is the same at either level.

One pound per five cubic feet is the floor

Heartfelt, a humidity bead maker, publishes the rule: 5 cubic feet requires 1 pound of beads. Its chart works in ounces, 1 ounce for every 540 cubic inches, and it says to round up when you buy. In metric that is about 91 grams per cubic foot, or 3.2 grams per liter.

The calculator multiplies your inside width, depth and height, converts to cubic feet, and applies that rate. Nothing else is modelled.

The same maker gives a second, heavier rate

Heartfelt also lists 1 pound of beads per 50 quarts for coolerdors. Fifty quarts is 1.67 cubic feet, so that rate is about three times the cabinet rule. The calculator shows both ends and says so, rather than picking one for you.

We did not find another bead maker that publishes a weight per volume, so there is no second maker to compare against. Heartfelt adds that there is no maximum: extra beads mean more stored water and faster recovery after the door opens, and they will not push the RH over the bead's level.

Does 65, 69 or 70% change how many grams?

No. Beads are made to hold one RH level, and Heartfelt's sizing is the same for its 65% and 70% beads. The target only decides which beads you buy.

Heartfelt lists its beads at 65% and 70%, not 69%. If 69% is the number you want, 70% beads are the near match, or switch to two-way packs, which are made at 69%. The humidity pack calculator counts those, and the guide to humidification methods compared covers where beads fit against the other options.

Distilled water only, and less than you think

Humidity beads are silica beads treated to hold a set RH, recharged with distilled water when they dry out. Heartfelt's setup page says not to add any water before first use. Put them in dry. Add water only when your hygrometer shows the RH dropping.

  • How much: Heartfelt's rule of thumb is 25 ml of distilled water per pound of beads. A little goes a long way.
  • How: a syringe or spray bottle spread over the beads, or a dish of distilled water sat next to them so they draw it in.
  • Never: tap water, humidifier solution, or beads left sitting in excess water. Heartfelt says other liquids will ruin them.
  • Not all clear: aim for about 80 to 90% of beads clear. Fully clear beads have no room left to soak up a humid spike.

How often do beads need recharging?

When they go white, not on a calendar. Heartfelt gives no fixed schedule: wet beads look clear and dry beads turn bright white. A dry winter, a leaky door seal or opening the cooler daily all mean more frequent top-ups.

Your hygrometer is the trigger, so make sure it is honest. The hygrometer calibration calculator turns a salt test result into an offset.

Humidity bead questions for wineador owners

How many grams of humidity beads does a wineador need?

About 91 grams per cubic foot at minimum, from Heartfelt's rule of one pound per five cubic feet. A 2.5 cubic foot cooler needs about 227 grams, half a pound.

Can you use too many humidity beads?

No. Heartfelt says there is no maximum and that extra beads will not over-humidify. They add moisture storage and help the box recover faster after you open it.

Can I use tap water on humidity beads?

No. Heartfelt says anything other than distilled water will ultimately ruin the beads, and the same goes for humidifier solutions.

Do new humidity beads need water before use?

Not Heartfelt's. Its setup page says not to add distilled water before using them; add a small amount only once your hygrometer shows the RH dropping.
