Villiger cigars

Villiger is a Swiss family tobacco company founded in Pfeffikon in 1888, and its US premium cigars are rolled in Estelí, Nicaragua, and in the Dominican Republic.

Villiger began with a widow and two sons

Jean Villiger founded a small cigar factory in his home village of Pfeffikon, Switzerland, in 1888, and the company is still headquartered there.

He died in 1902. His widow, Louise, née Ottiger, ran the business while the children were young, and in 1910 she opened the first subsidiary across the border in Tiengen, Germany. Sons Max and Hans took over in the early 1920s and grew it into an international name.

Heinrich Villiger, Max's son, took over management in 1989. That same year his younger brother Kaspar was elected to the Swiss Federal Council, and later served a term as President of the Swiss Confederation in 1995. Heinrich died in 2025, aged 95. Wikipedia calls the holding company Villiger Söhne Holding AG and describes it as family owned and managed in the fourth and fifth generations.

Villiger runs factories on three continents

Villiger makes most of its volume as machine-made cigars and cigarillos in Europe and Indonesia, and its handmade premium cigars in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

Wikipedia lists production in Pfeffikon, in Bünde, Germany, in Jember on Java, Indonesia, and in Estelí. It puts output at more than a billion cigars and cigarillos a year, with over 1,200 staff and revenue of about CHF 140 million in 2025.

The premium side is newer. Villiger de Nicaragua opened in Estelí in October 2021, a roughly 33,000 square foot building with about 80 rollers at launch, per Cigar Aficionado. Joya de Nicaragua, which had rolled several Villiger brands under contract, helped set it up. Villiger also owns a factory in Brazil and contracts the ABAM factory in the Dominican Republic for brands such as Bock and La Flor de Ynclan.

Villiger leaf by stated origin

Villiger names the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Honduras and Brazil as tobacco origins, according to Wikipedia.

Line by line, the published detail is thin. The clearest blend on record is Villiger 1888 Nicaragua: Ecuadorian wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and filler from Nicaragua and Pennsylvania, per Cigar Coop's 2023 trade show report. Most other premium lines list only a country of manufacture. Brazil shows up both as a tobacco origin and as the home of a Villiger-owned factory. For background on those growing areas, see cigar tobacco regions.

Villiger premium lines sold in the US

Villiger Cigars North America, based in Miami, sells the premium range in the United States, and most of it now comes from the Estelí factory.

Before you try a Villiger

A Villiger in a US cigar shop and a Villiger in a European kiosk are usually different products: one handmade premium, the other machine-made.

Check the band. The premium lines carry their own names, La Libertad, San'Doro, 1888, with Villiger added later as an umbrella logo. Country of origin moved for some of them, too. La Libertad was Dominican-made until production shifted to Nicaragua in 2021, so the box may say either country depending on its age.
