How to dry box a cigar

Dry boxing means resting a cigar outside the humidor, unwrapped, for an hour to a day before you smoke it. It sheds surface moisture so an over-humid cigar draws and burns properly.

What a few hours out of the humidor does

A cigar that leaves humid storage starts trading moisture with the room straight away, and the outer leaves dry first.

The wrapper and the outside of the bunch lose water fastest. The core lags behind. Rest it a few hours and you get a firmer wrapper, a drier foot that lights more easily and a draw that opens up a touch. The middle of the cigar is still moist. That's the point. You're trimming the extra, not drying the whole thing.

Some smokers use the name for a dedicated box with no humidifier in it. Same idea. A plain cigar box, a drawer or a shelf all work, as long as the spot is out of the sun and away from vents.

Signs a cigar is too wet to smoke well

An over-humid cigar feels spongy, draws tight, goes out often and can taste sour or heavy.

  • Spongy body. A gentle pinch leaves a soft dent that's slow to spring back.
  • Hard to light, harder to keep lit. The foot hisses or chars instead of catching.
  • Tight draw. Swollen filler leaves less room for air.
  • Uneven burn. Wet spots lag, so the burn line wanders.
  • Swollen or split wrapper. Extra water makes the filler expand under it.

Boveda lists spongy tobacco, inconsistent burns that don't stay lit and split wrappers among the results of storage above 72% relative humidity. Wikipedia's cigar article adds that damp cigars take on a heavy, acidic flavor. If the cigar instead feels crunchy and the wrapper flakes, it's the opposite problem, and the dry cigar guide applies.

Dry boxing step by step

Dry boxing takes no gear: pull the cigar, leave it in open air somewhere neutral, check it, then smoke it.

  1. Pick the cigar the night before, or that morning. Planning is the whole trick.
  2. Take off the cellophane. Sealed cello slows the moisture loss to a crawl.
  3. Set it somewhere neutral. An empty cigar box with the lid open, or a clean shelf. No direct sun, no heater, no air-conditioning vent.
  4. Leave it for the time in the table. Turn it once halfway through so it dries evenly.
  5. Check by feel. Firm with a little give, like a ripe plum. Not spongy, not crisp.
  6. Smoke it the same day. If plans change, put it back in the humidor.

How long to dry box, by storage humidity and ring

Most cigars stored near 70% need one to three hours; wetter or thicker cigars need longer, up to about a day.

Stored at 72%1–2 hours2–4 hours3–6 hours
Above 72%, or feels spongy3–6 hours6–12 hours12–24 hours

These times are our estimate, not a measured standard. They assume an indoor room around 70°F and 40–50% RH. A dry room, a desert climate or high altitude speeds things up, so cut the times. A muggy room slows them down.

Can you overdo it?

Yes, a cigar left out too long dries all the way through and smokes hot, fast and flat.

Wikipedia's cigar article puts it plainly: without a humidor, cigars lose moisture and settle at the room's humidity within two to three days. Boveda lists muted flavor, quick burns and cracked wrappers as the cost of storage below 65%. One day out is plenty for almost any cigar. Forgot one for a week? Dry boxing every cigar? Fix the storage

If nearly every cigar needs a dry box, the storage humidity is set too high for your taste and should come down.

Boveda's guidance puts the useful storage range at 65% to 72% RH, and describes its 65% pack as a fit for people who prefer a drier cigar and an easier burn. Dropping your pack from 72% or 69% to 65% does the dry boxing for you, every cigar, every time. The humidity pack calculator picks the count for your box. Temperature matters too: the 70/70 humidity calculator shows how a warm room changes what a given RH means.

One more check. A box that sits above 72% for weeks is a mold risk. White fuzz on the wrapper is a different conversation, covered in mold vs plume.

Dry boxing questions

How long should you dry box a cigar?

Anywhere from an hour to a day, depending on how wet it started and how thick it is. Most cigars stored around 70% need only one to three hours. Our timing table is an estimate, so go by feel.

Can you dry box a cigar for too long?

Yes. A cigar left out for days drifts toward the room's humidity and can crack, burn fast and lose flavor. Past a day, put it back in storage.

Do you dry box a cigar with the cellophane on?

Take the cellophane off, or at least open both ends. Sealed cellophane slows moisture loss so much that a short dry box does very little.

Is dry boxing the same as storing cigars at lower humidity?

No. Dry boxing is a short rest before one smoke. Storing at a lower RH, such as 65%, changes every cigar in the box and needs no extra step.
