How to get cigar smell out

Cigar smell lives in residue on surfaces and fabric, so you get it out by cleaning: wash hard surfaces, launder fabrics, change air filters, then air the space. Candles and sprays only cover it.

Smoke residue sticks to everything

Stale cigar smell comes from chemicals in the smoke that settle onto surfaces and soak into soft materials, then release slowly for days or weeks.

The EPA describes exactly this. Chemicals from smoking "can build up on hard surfaces such as walls, tables and floors," and can embed in clothing, upholstery, drapes, bedding and carpet. Its page adds: "Even after a person stops smoking or vaping, some of the chemicals released can remain indoors for a long time."

So the air isn't the problem. The room is. That's why a smell you aired out last night is back by morning.

Where the smell hides, and what removes it

Each surface holds smoke differently, so each one needs its own fix.

The cleaning methods come from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's guide to removing smoke smell from a home. It was written for wildfire smoke, but the residue problem is the same.

Clearing a room after a cigar

Getting cigar smell out of a room means removing the residue from every surface it reached, then letting fresh air finish the job.

  1. Air it out. Open windows and doors. Fresh air dilutes the smell while you work.
  2. Strip the fabric. Curtains, throws, cushion covers, bedding. Launder or dry clean them.
  3. Wash the hard surfaces. Walls, tables, shelves, sills. Mild soap, then rinse. Don't skip the insides of cabinets and closets.
  4. Treat what can't be washed. Sprinkle baking soda on carpet and upholstery, leave it, then vacuum. Steam clean heavy cases.
  5. Set out absorbers. Bowls of white vinegar, baking soda or powdered activated charcoal, left for several days.
  6. Change the air filter. The HVAC filter has been catching smoke the whole time.

Texas A&M's guide is blunt on two points. Ventilation "only dilutes the odor and does not remove the smell permanently." And candles and perfumed sprays "most often only mask the odor temporarily." Clean first. Freshen second.

One smoke in a room clears with a wipe-down and a night of open windows. Years of smoking in the same room may need the carpet and drapes replaced. The guide says so too.

How do you get cigar smell out of a car?

A car holds cigar smell harder than a house because the cabin is small and lined with fabric, so cleaning has to reach the headliner, seats and air system.

Vacuum the seats and carpets, including under the seats. Wipe the dash, doors and console with mild soap or white vinegar. Sprinkle baking soda on cloth seats and floor mats, leave it a few hours, then vacuum again. Leave an open bowl of baking soda or activated charcoal in the cabin for a few days. Then replace the cabin air filter, which most owners never think about.

The EPA's position is clear about prevention. It says the only way to eliminate secondhand exposure is to prohibit smoking and vaping indoors, "including in cars" and other vehicles. Smell follows the same logic. If the cigar is never lit inside, there's nothing to clean.

Clothes, hats and jackets

Clothes worn while smoking pick up the smell in their fibers, and laundering removes it, the same step Texas A&M lists for smoke-damaged homes.

Wash what can be washed, with a cup of white vinegar added to the usual detergent, as the Texas A&M guide suggests. Smell each piece before it goes in the dryer. Still smoky? Wash again. The guide warns that drying clothes that still smell of smoke may set the odor in the fabric. Dry clean what can't go in the machine. For a jacket you wore on the patio, hang it outside in open air for a day before it goes back in a closet. A closed closet passes the smell to everything else in it.

Spray deodorizers made for fabric help on things you can't wash. Texas A&M's guide makes the distinction: treat fabric with deodorizing products, not odor-masking sprays.

Hands and breath

Cigar smell on your hands and breath comes from direct contact with the leaf and the smoke, and washing and brushing remove most of it.

Hands. Soap and warm water, twice. Scrub the fingertips and under the nails, where the cigar sat. Wikipedia notes that cigar holders were historically used "to protect the hand from acquiring the odor of a burning cigar." A light grip helps too. The grip guide shows where your fingers go.

Breath. Brush your teeth and your tongue, then rinse. Drink water. A meal helps more than a mint, which only adds a second smell on top of the first.

Smoke outside and there's less to clean

Smoking outdoors, away from doors and open windows, is the one step that keeps cigar smell out of a home in the first place.

The EPA says "Ventilation, filtration and air cleaning techniques can reduce these exposures, but they will not eliminate them." It advises smoking away from building air intakes, doors, open windows and vehicles. A shorter cigar means less smoke on your clothes, too. The smoke time estimator helps you pick a size that fits a short session on the porch.

Cigar odor questions from home and car

How long does cigar smell last in a house?

Until the residue is cleaned off. The EPA says some chemicals released by smoking "can remain indoors for a long time," and airing a room out dilutes the smell rather than removing it.

Does opening a window get rid of cigar smell?

It helps but does not finish the job. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says ventilation only dilutes smoke odor and does not remove it permanently; cleaning the surfaces does.

How do you get cigar smell off your hands?

Wash with soap and warm water, scrubbing the fingertips and under the nails, where the smell sits. A second wash usually finishes it.

Do candles or air fresheners remove cigar smell?

No. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says scented candles and perfumed sprays most often only mask smoke odor temporarily.
